WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court heard a major case on affirmative action in higher education on Wednesday, one that has the potential to limit or do away with racial preferences in admissions decisions at colleges and universities.
It was the court’s second look at the admissions program at the University of Texas at Austin. The last time, in 2013, the court avoided giving a direct answer about the constitutionality of the program used by the university, and returned the case to an appeals court for reconsideration.
